If not, call the American Red Cross at
To request FREE Smoke Alarms!
The American Red Cross and its partners are currently providing FREE smoke alarms and batteries to Hunt and Rains County residents that qualify. Alarms are installed by Red Cross Volunteers or community partners like the local fire department, at no cost to residents.
Please note the process may take up to 90 days.
Why do I need smoke alarms?
Smoke alarms provide an early warning of fire and can increase the chances of a safe escape. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, more deaths in house fires are caused by smoke rather than burns. Children and senior citizens are at greater risk.
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home.
Test the batteries once a month. Change them twice a year.
Develop a home escape plan in case of fire. Have at least two exits from every room and designate an outside meeting spot.
Keep matches and lighters away from children. Put them in high places out of reach.
Keep anything that can catch fire away from space heaters. Unplug them when not in use.
7 times a day
in the United States, some-one dies in a home fire.
