Greenville’s Upper Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District has blue bonnet seed available for planting.  This service is provided once per year and now is the time to plant for fields of blue next spring.  The seed comes in one pound bags and is priced at $27.00 per bag.  You will be provided instructions for soil preparation when you purchase the bag of seed.  Be sure and follow the instructions or you may find that you have bought some very expensive bird feed!  Each bag should cover 2,000 square feet. An acre will require 20 to 30 pounds of seed.  Blue bonnets come up every spring so you have to plant just one time.

The seed may be picked up at the USDA office located on 2206 Trader Road in Greenville.  This is immediately behind the Super Walmart.  The office is open from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.  Call (903) 455-6212 should you need seeds for an acre or more and the office personnel can put in a special order for you.

While you are in the USDA office ask about the Range Plants of North Central Texas coffee table book.  Impress family and friends with your new found knowledge of prairie plants found in and around Hunt County.
